Customer Reviews

Entertaining. My grandson, just turned 8, and granddaughter about to turn 10 both enjoyed this. The glittery floss was so appealing the girl made her heart bracelet with all glitter, then discovered it was scratchy. The grandson made a red & black diamond bracelet and happily wore it everywhere including the tub. He didn't get a red wrist! Grandmother tried the square bracelet. It is a bit more complex. I put 2 beads on and decided they weren't worth the effort to repeat. One rule that should have been written and was not: Select the number of threads and colors dependent on the number of colors of petal slots to put the threads in. Both written examples called for 6 strings of one color and 10 strings of another color. The diamond bracelet need 12 strings of one color and 4 of the other. In one video the little girl did get the number of colors right, but not the length. She was cutting all threads 40". That is only necessary when doing the square looms and that is for only the 2 side threads. We did find that the glittery threads don't stretch as much the cotton threads, so glittery threads might need to be a bit longer than 20". Videos very helpful. 4Great gift for crafty girlsI originally bought this gift for my almost 8 year old daughter but ended up using it as a last minute birthday gift for her friend. It was the gift that got the highest excitement reaction! The foam bracelet makers are easy for little hands to hold and make it easy for them to follow the directions to make their own one of a kind bracelets. This is a great and unique gift idea for any little girl. 5Buy if you have TIME PLUS PATIENCEI bought this kit for my 10 YO cousin after observing her fascination with bands. It arrived in the summertime when school was out for TWO MONTHS. I thought she would love to keep herself busy making bands- HER FASCINATION..... SADLY I WAS MISTAKEN.It didn't take too long for us to understand the instructions but that was as far as she got. Eventually she concluded that YES she likes the bands BUT I should make them for her. Not exactly what I had in mind!Approx 6 months later I've made about 8 bands....far from the excitement I had in mind.As it turns out though- the round ones are much easier to make. I guess that is because they stretch quite a bit. It took me about two hours to get one done at approx 6 inches. The flat ones take maybe 5-6 hours to get the same 6inch finish. And dare I say- I had a decent pace going. So unless the intended recipient has shown PATIENCE in arts and crafts- PLEASE don't spend on this kit 4For anyone who is wanting an easy kit to make braceletsFor anyone who is wanting an easy kit to make bracelets, this is not the one! It comes with a TON of string however it is so complicated that I can't even use it the way the instructions say to. I am literally 22 years old and I spent over 30 minutes just trying to understand the instructions and measuring and cutting string that I was over it. I actually tried more than once and had other people try to understand it and do it and it was just more trouble than it was worth. I am really curious how children are supposed to be able to do this. 1Okay, I feel ridiculous trying to help my daughter ...Okay, I feel ridiculous trying to help my daughter with this toy. I learned how to make friendship bracelets as a child and thought this would help my soon-to-be 8 year old learn too, but the foam holders just made things more confusing. The string required about 2 full colors to make 1 bracelet - I plan on buying her replacement floss at a craft store if she ever picks this up again. It's a cute set, but definitely requires some patience. 4Would not recommendBought this for my niece-in-law who is 9 years old. We first followed the directions (via the printed manual) on a particular bracelet design but the bracelet ended up being too wide so we were only able to get ~0.75 inches in length completed. After looking at the recommended video, I saw that you need to tighten the two longer strings before you start another row. Attempt #2 bracelet - even though we tightened the two strings for each row, the bracelet was still too wide and if continued, would probably be not as skinny as the pictures and wouldn't allow for a normal sized length bracelet. There might have been some (if not a lot) of user error involved but having to read the manual AND watch the video AND do trial and error AND still not get to the pictured result for a product is not a good set of instructions for a product (in my opinion).I believe the kit is just sitting gathering dust now.I'd give the kit 1 star but added another to account for user error.By the way, if you are the type to shut down (mentally) by having to read an instruction manual to change the clock on a VCR, then I would recommend watching the video first instead of going to the printed manual (it is a bear of a set of instructions). 2Friends 4 Ever Craft Kit Review (with info on where to watch the 'to do' video) and pros and Cons of the kitFirst let me say that I bought this for my daughter for Christmas 2011. I did not look at the product dimensions, so I was surprised at how small it was when it came.lol. However, the size did not take away from its quality, and after the initial surprise at the size, I came to realize that is was enough in terms of quantity (see product info for details on the amount of floss included.)Before I go on to list the pros and cons, let me state that I would not recommend this to any kids under age 8 (unless u want to end up doing it all yourself.)Also, this calls for a lot of patience, A LOT. so if you know that your kid is the type that will give up in ten minutes, and fling it in a corner, then do not buy it! In addition, you the parent will probably have to help your child, even at age 8, with the first two or three bracelets, especially if she/he is not used to crafts.PROS1. This particular kit is a colourful, well designed, reusable package. My daughter plans to store small craft and sewing items in it.2. Once you get the hang of it , the bracelets seem like child play to make. I will say this, though. You need to have patience. It takes about half an hour to make one, if you don't stop and about an hour if you have to take a break in between.3. You get a sense of accomplishment as you watch the bracelet form. According to my kids..."It's magic!"4. The colours are pretty and varied. My kit even came with a skein of gold and one of silver floss. There are also some two-toned skeins of floss. There are also two small containers of glossy beads that you can put at the ends of the bracelets. There is a type of needle that comes with it as well, I assume that it is to help with the threading of the beads.5. The patterns look awesome. There are eight different patterns you can try using the looms, and they all look lovely. Hey, I messed up on my first two and the bracelets still looked good! CONS1. The instructions were useless to me. Instead of trying to understand them (and it aint easy!!!)go to manufacturers web site and and click on the 'product instruction' link, click on Videos and scroll down on page one until you find the name of the craft set, click on it and watch the very easy to understand, step by step product Instruction video about how to make the bracelets. Note that the video features an older version of the craft set (i.e different packaging) but the same rules apply.2. I had a bad experience with some of the floss becoming undone while I worked with it on the loom , so that I had to 'twist' it back together to use it. It was easy to rectify and did not affect the quality of the design or the bracelet.3. Another con is that, just like the video says, you really have to be combing the loose floss OFTEN to keep them from tangling as you work. As the bracelets get longer, and the loose floss becomes shorter this becomes less of an issue, but for the first 20 minutes or so you have to be combing, combing, combing... It is necessary, but VERY annoying!Anyway, I do not regret buying this. I had just as much fun as my daughter making the bracelets! You get a feeling of accomplishment and pride when ever you finish one and they look professional if you do them the right way, and still look great even if you mess up once or twice on the pattern (when i messed up, I just took all the floss off the loom, put them back in their original positions, and began at the 'start' section of the loom. You see a little glitch in the pattern where u restarted, but then after that it picks up again.)So buy and enjoy! 5Very frustrating. Metallic string unravels easily. My mom purchased this bracelet kit for me this Christmas. I was excited to make my first bracelet and spent most of Christmas day trying. I attempted to make a bracelet for several hours, but was unsuccessful and asked my dad for help. He found the directions confusing, so we looked online for a video. He started weaving it, but also found it very frustrating. The colors are beautiful, but the gold and silver string unravels easily making it impossible to weave. This kit was very frustrating. I would not recommend it. 1Very easy but only if...First let me admit I too was confused by the instructions. Four languages describing the same process steps and all jammed onto a single page? There is so much noise on the instruction sheet, I completely understand when someone rates this product low for being too difficult. However, once I saw the reference on the sheet to a website (alex toys [dot] com) and the fact there are videos available to show how it is done, my daughter and I went there. In just a few minutes, we watched as a young girl demonstrated how to use the looms. Like an old V8 drink commercial, you will be knocking yourself in the head for how easy this truly is.From the home page of their site, follow the "Product Instructions" link. The video for the [square] loom is available under the link "Best Friend Bands". The (round) or petal loom instruction video is under the link "Friends 4 Ever".Though all the bands use the same two weaving styles and you are only varying the pattern of colors, this product is a wonderful way to pull your child's attention away from the TV, iPod, NDS and the refrigerator. It is a great way to keep them occupied in the car on a long trip. Also, the bands created using the round loom may seem somewhat short and you will think the strings need to be cut longer, know that they have a tendency to <---stretch---> once completed. This is especially true if you keep the strings particularly taut while looming. 5Great craft for a group!!I ordered this for my niece who was at camp. I saw that rain was on the forecast on the Wednesday of her week long stay. I sent it up and she, of course had to sing for her package. Hehehe. There was enough string for everyone in her cabin to participate & have fun. The girls all made great memories just hanging out in their cabin, making bracelets. 5
